Enhance your website with Facebook Open Graph’s Protocol

Open graph protocol (OGP) is a tool for you to integrate your website becomes a rich object in a social graph.  This concept will be useful for business and services.

Currently this is used on Facebook which is any website can have similar functionality as a facebook’s page. For example, when user click button “Like”, automatically, your web page will connected with user. In addition, you get an administration interface, and Insights metrics tools, just like those of any Facebook Page owner.

How to implement?

First thing, you have to add “Like” button (*either using XFBML tag or iframe) and OGP tags on your web page.

However, we’ve based the initial version of the protocol on RDFa which means that you’ll place additional tags in the of your web page. The four required properties for every page are:

  • og:title – The title of your object as it should appear within the graph, e.g., “The Rock”.
  • og:type – The type of your object, e.g., “movie”. Depending on the type you specify, other properties may also be required.
  • og:image – An image URL which should represent your object within the graph.
  • og:url – The canonical URL of your object that will be used as its permanent ID in the graph, e.g., “http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117500/“.

* These two are exactly the same but XFBML tag can add comment. Then, the action will published in the feed as a full story in the stream; if not, it’s published as a one-line story.

Finally, publishers can specify to change the language on the Like button to “Recommend” instead of “Like”. This is to avoid awkward language when they want to share the information and discuss the topic about with others rather than “Like” only.

What will you get?

  1. You can now communicate with people who Like your URL just like Fan Page owners have historically been able to communicate with fans – publishing updates to their Facebook stream.
  2. You also get all the traditional analytics tools Facebook has historically provided Fan Page owners.
  3. When Facebook gets metadata about your URL (when someone likes it), it’s able to categorize it and put it in the right slot on a user’s “Info” tab on the profile, and generally display it in a more rich way whenever it shows up in the stream.
